Jumbo Bags in the UAE: A Buyer's Guide to Types, Sizes and Suppliers

Jumbo bags — also called FIBCs (flexible intermediate bulk containers) or bulk bags — are large woven polypropylene bags used to store and move dry bulk materials such as cement, sand, chemicals, food ingredients and plastic pellets. In the UAE, most buyers need bags that carry between roughly 500 and 1,500 kg, are lifted by forklift or crane, and match their filling and discharge equipment. The right bag depends on four things: the product, the weight per bag, how it is handled, and whether static electricity is a risk.

What is a jumbo bag?

A jumbo bag is a flexible container woven from polypropylene tape, sewn into a cube or cylinder, with lifting loops at the top. It folds flat when empty and stands on a pallet or the floor when full. Compared with small 25 or 50 kg sacks, one jumbo bag replaces dozens of bags, which cuts filling time, handling and packaging waste.

Common jumbo bag types

Jumbo bags are usually described by how they are built, how they are lifted and how they handle static.

By construction:

  • U-panel and 4-panel bags — sewn from flat fabric panels; strong and economical for dense products. See U-panel bulk bags.
  • Tubular (circular) bags — woven as a tube with no side seams, good for fine powders. See tubular and full-loop bags.
  • Baffle (Q) bags — internal baffles keep the bag square so it stacks well and fills a container more efficiently.

By lifting:

  • Full-loop, cross-corner and tunnel loops for forklifts.
  • Single or two-loop bags for crane handling, common for fertilizer and minerals.

By static protection (defined in IEC 61340-4-4):

  • Type A and B for non-flammable products and surroundings.
  • Type C conductive bags, which must be earthed during filling and emptying.
  • Type D antistatic bags, which need no earthing.

Our guide Type A, B, C or D: which jumbo bag is safe for your powder? explains the differences in detail.

Special designs include UN-certified bags for dangerous goods, ventilated bags for produce, and container liners that turn a 20 ft or 40 ft container into one large bulk bag.

Sizes and safe working load

The most common base sizes are around 90 × 90 cm, with heights chosen to suit the product's bulk density and the weight you want per bag. Every bag has a safe working load (SWL) — the maximum weight it may carry — and a safety factor: 5:1 for single-trip bags and 6:1 for bags designed to be reused. Testing to ISO 21898 confirms a bag survives the required multiple of its SWL.

What to specify when you ask for a quote

A good quote starts with a clear specification. Have these details ready:

  • The product, its bulk density and whether it is a powder, granule or pellet.
  • The weight per bag you want to fill.
  • Filling method: spout, duffle (skirt) top or open top.
  • Discharge method: discharge spout or flat bottom.
  • Whether you need an inner liner, for example for fine powders or food products.
  • Static risk: is the product or the area flammable?
  • Single-trip or multi-trip use.
  • Printing: your logo, product name and handling marks, on 1, 2 or 4 sides.
  • Quantity and delivery location.

Why buy from a UAE manufacturer

Buying from a manufacturer in the region makes it easier to see samples, adjust a design between orders and get support when something on your filling line changes. It also keeps the supply chain short for plants in the UAE and the wider GCC.

Blue Line Pack, part of Blue Line Industries, manufactures FIBC jumbo bags, container liners and woven PP and BOPP bags in two factories — Mussafah ICAD 1 in Abu Dhabi and Raysut Industrial City in Salalah, Oman — with sales offices in Dammam and Doha. We make single-trip (5:1) and multi-trip (6:1) bags with safe working loads up to 1,500 kg, including Type C, Type D and UN bags, for food, chemicals, cement, polymer resin and any dry bulk material. Our quality management is ISO 9001 certified. See the full range of jumbo bags or request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a jumbo bag and an FIBC? There is none — "jumbo bag", "bulk bag", "big bag" and "FIBC" all describe the same flexible intermediate bulk container.

How much can a jumbo bag carry? It depends on the design. Most bags in the UAE carry between about 500 and 1,500 kg; Blue Line Pack makes bags with safe working loads up to 1,500 kg. Never fill a bag beyond the SWL on its label.

Can jumbo bags be reused? Only bags designed and labelled as multi-trip, built to a 6:1 safety factor, should be reused — and only after inspection. Single-trip 5:1 bags should be used once.
